HINDU
POLITICAL AND RELIGIOUS CRITIQUES |
|
Hence
it is difficult to argue that Hindus in India, though they are the
majority, have an unfair advantage and other religions require
special favor to prevent discrimination against them. In fact one
could better argue that the government of India, under Western
influences, has been continuing the same colonial anti-Hindu
policies under the guise of secularism.
Secularism in American does not mean that
Christianity has to bow down before other religions but that no
religion has a legal sanction in its favor. However, modern India
has made secularism into an abasement of Hinduism. The result is
that the same conversion policies promoted by previous British and
Islamic rulers are now allowed by the Indian government, and that
just as British and Islamic rulers inhibited Hindu criticism of
their conversion efforts, so the Indian government looks with
disfavor on Hindu efforts to discriminate their beliefs from those
of others.
In India today Hindus are often regarded as
communal for questioning the very religions that are trying to
convert them. Missionaries are not criticized as communal because
Hindus should tolerate all religions. It is not for Hindus to
criticize the faith of another, though others can criticize Hindus
if that is part of their faith. This disparity has led to much
confusion and national weakness. The problem is that Hindus have
confused political tolerance of religions with political catering to
religions and with an acceptance of all religions as good. |
