The
Mistake of Christianity and Islam
Christianity and Islam both claim to represent the
true religion of humanity, and therefore must be examined in this
context. Of course there are individuals, if not entire groups
within each religion who are open-minded and accept that other
religions, including non-Biblical traditions like Hinduism and
Buddhism are products of a higher truth. Such people may be ashamed
of the conversion efforts of their coreligionists.
These minority views, which are laudable and
closer to a real universal religion, are not the object of this
discussion but the majority views and actions of these religions,
which remain in force as their primary presentation in the world.
In addition it is not the
intention here to produce an in depth discussion of the two
religions. It is mainly their contentions to represent the true
religion of humanity, and their corresponding efforts to convert
others that is our concern, not their other aspects or relevance on
other levels.
While there may be much of
value in these religions, there is much of the universal religion
that they do not include and their formulation tends to be
exclusive, limited, time-bound and anthropocentric. Christianity,
as how the great majority of its followers and its leaders formulate
it, claims that it is the revelation of the only Son of God, Jesus,
and therefore that it is true and universal for all human beings.
However there is nothing universal about one figure or one Son of
God. |
