Astringent is
as in unripe bananas, persimmons or herbs with tannins like alum root, witch hazel or oak
bark. Its effect is to stop excess discharges and is astringent,
hemostatic, vulnerary, expectorant and diuretic in action.
Three tastes increase and three tastes decrease each of the biological humors. They are
increased by those tastes which predominate in the same elements which compose them and they are
decreased by those which are of different or opposite nature than the
elements which compose them.
Kapha is increased by sweet, salty and sour (which predominate in earth and water) and decreased by
pungent, bitter and astringent (which predominate in air). Vata is decreased by sweet, salty and sour
and increased by bitter, astringent and pungent. Pitta is increased by
pungent, sour and salty (which predominate in fire) and decreased by bitter, astringent and sweet
(which have no fire).
