Tirukarambanur
- Purushothaman Temple
Among
a cluster of ancient Vaishnava kshetras, situated at close quarters of the
famous Sri Rangam, this one established a name for itself by the infinite
benevolence showered on the adorers by Sri Mahavishnu abiding here in the name
of Purushothaman. This has the additional name of Cittamar and it is equally
popular. Mother Mahalakshmi is adored in the local name of I'urvadevi Natchiar.
The images are exquisitely chiselled and are pleasant to sight. Built according
to Vastu sastra in the Dravidian style of construction, vastness and majesty
peep through every frame, both inside and atop the Mahadwara. We garbhagriha is
beautified with Utyogha Vimana. The temple tank is called Kadamba Thirtha and
devotees bathing in it reach the sannidhi for worship. Daily worship is offered
with due veneration according to agamic tenets. Periodical festivals are
celebrated with great eclat luring huge crowds. This is one among the 108 Divya
Desams deemed
visitation a MUST for the orthodox Vaishnavates. It enjoys a steady stream of
visitors due to vicinity to Srirangam and availability of conveyance. Tirumangai
Alwar offered his soulful Mangalasasanam and is sung with great fervor on all
occasions.
It
lies 5 km off Srirangam, the famous pilgrim town of Tamilnadu, accessible by
town bus.
