Tirukkannapuram
- Neelamegha Perumal Temple
This
forms as one of the 40 Divya Desams of Chola nadu and was adored by as many as
five celebrated Alwars in rapturous ecstasy of delight. The Moolavar is called
Neelamegha Perumal, but Utsava vigrah goes by the name of Souriraya Perumal. He
is in standing posture facing east. The Goddess is called Kannapura Nayaki and
the temple tanks - Nithya pushkarini, I3hoolavatha thirtha and Ananthapila
thirtha each having long legends. The garbhagriha is adorned with
Vutpalavarthaka Vimana. Nithyanaimithika worship is offered with great
devotional fervour. Among the devout ministrels, Peiia Alwar, Andal Natchiyar,
Nammalwar, Kulasekhar Alwar, Tirumangai Alwar sang in praise of the presiding
deity and brought out His immanent, immaculate glory, illustrating with several
anecdotes. Among the liberated with boons, Kanva Mahamuni deserves mention
first. He was blessed with darsan when sought protection.
It
lies near Nannilam railway station on the Mayuvaram - Tiruvarur line and can be
reached by four wheelers.
