Tirukaalisirama
Vinnagaram - Trivikrama Temple
This
is an ancient much-hallowed Vaishnava kshetra enshrining one of the rare icons
of Trivikrama, the fifth incarnation of lord Sri Mahavishnu. It is a decently
built big temple facing east. The Mahadwara, tall tower, vast courtyards,
spacious mandaps speak greatly of the patrons - who embellished them with
exquisite sculpture. The mulavirat Vamana, popular as Tiruvikrama here is in
standing posture with leg held aloft in the act of measuring sky to completing
the condition of the gift generously granted by Bali Chakravarthi. It is quite
bewitching and the elaborate decoration heightening the glorious form wrings
veneration when it comes into the sight of bhaktas. The place was visited by
many Alwars who sang in praise of the Lord. It is said that in an odd contest
entered into by Tirugnana Sambandar with Tirumangai Alwar once under strange
circumstances, Tirumangai Alwar scored victory, and so was rewarded by Sambandar
a beautiful spear, Lord Muruga s potent weapon. Then flowed down many laudatory
songs from the lips of Sambandar too in praise of the victor. This kshetra was
visited by Manavala mahamuni who offered poetic flowers to the Lord that are
adorning the bhakti literature.
The
Lord gave darsan to Ashtakona Maharshi. The garbha giiha adorned with
Pushkalavartha Vimana, possesses another adorable image Trivikrama murti, the
fifth incarnation of Lord Mahavishnu. And He enjoys equal status and receives
ritualistic worship as that of the Moolavar. The Goddess is called Loka Nayaki,
and the temple tanks go by the names of Chakra thirtha and Sankha thirtha. And
they have long legends. Nithyanaimithika ritualistic worship is offered with
great devotional fervor.
It
lies 1 km off Sirkazhi, the famous temple town in the state of Tamil Nadu,
accessible by bus.
