Rajahmundry-Sri
Venugopalaswamy Aalayam
Sri
Venugopalaswamy is the kshetrapalaka of Rajahmundry, the erstwhile capital of
several celebrated dynasties. It contains numerous relics in various forms, Eke
yugas old temples, historical monuments etc. The temple of Venugopalaswamy now
lying near the Kantbham Choultry on the bank of Pavana Goutanu was once enjoying
exalted position, situated at the present Mosque lying on the main road now. It
was an ardently sought-after place of worship during its heyday in the bygone
past. Unfortunately its fabulous wealth and unearthly glamour ignited the flames
of avarice in the Muslim invaders and was raged to the ground by Moghul soldiers
in 1323 A.D. The pious public aided and abetted by philanthropists were adorning
this august icon in a small niche of the ruined shrine. And it was during the
rulers of Reddy dynasty an imposing temple with provision for all essential
parts was built and endowed it with a village for maintenance. And the present
shape was given by the Zamindar of Kochcharlakota who renovated spending huge
amount. Being benign in fulfilling the desires of the devotees and also holding
the august office of sentinel kshetrapalaka, this is visited by bhaktas
regularly and annual festivals are celebrated with great devotional fervor.
It
is in Rajahmundry, the district headquarters town of Andhra Pradesh on the
Calcutta-Madras broad guage line, commanding all facilities.
