Kothapet
- Channakesava Aalayam
Situated
at close proximity to Eluru, the head quarters town of West Godavari district,
this ancient Vaishnava kshetra lures one and all, but Vaishnavates in particular
for certain unique features. The sculptors' craftsmanship seems rivaling with
the Belur temple of the same name in Karnataka and it is the creditable plus
point that deserves first mention. The icon is a best specimen of superb
artistry, mirroring the patron's refined taste and commendable devotion. In the
sanctum sanctorum, there is a charming icon of Gangamata close to the lotus feet
of the archamurti. Listen to the marvel - the priest extols the glory of the
Lord saying that Mother Ganga is offering Jalaabhishek to the Lord round the
clock and throughout the year. Oozing of water at this point is glaringly
visible to all and the visitors join their palms in veneration when pointed out
by the priest. Will not such miracle make theists gape? And inflame their
slumbering devotional instincts and wavering spirits? The temple is of modest
dimensions, but endowed by the ruling kings lavishly. Agamic worship is offered
with great zeal. The temple's sculptural marvel and seeping of water at the
Lord's feet are great attractions for visitation to this old temple.
It
lies about 2 km off Eluru town, a fast flourishing town of Andhra Pradesh,
accessible by walk or cycle rickshaw from the bus stand.
