Kovvur
- Varadagopalaswamy Aalayam
This
Gopala kshetra has etched its glorious name in the Puranas. Its original name
given by Goutama mahaishi was Govur, a standing proof of the episode of the
death of Govu - cow, which died, on being driven out by the sage, when
destroying paddy. To expiate the sin of Gohatya, he
was directed by Lord Gopalaswamy to install his icon at this place, deemed very
sacred for several reasons. He did. The temple said to have been built in the
dim past was modest in dimensions. Later it was renovated from time to time by
the ruling princes and devout bhaktas. It is now possessing all the indispensable
parts, like prakara, etc. In addition, the mini-shrines are adorned with rare
images of the much adorable deities, like Dasanjaneya, Garuda etc. The paneled
walls beautified with fine sculptural
images feast the eyes of the visitors. The archamurti flanked by Satyabhama and
Rukmini is too grand and so the visitors drink in the beauty of the lord with
their eyes. The annual Kalyanotsav celebrated in Vaisakha masa attract thousands
of bhaktas from far and near. Mukkoti and Magha Suddha Ekadasi festivals too
are conducted on a grand scale.
It
lies on the Vijayawada- Vishakapatnam broad guage line very near to Rajahmundry
of Andhra Pradesh, commanding rail and road facilities.
