Narva,
the mandalam headquarters town of Alampur taluq of Palamur district of Andhra
Pradesh claims the honour of possessing many ancient temple, and among them
the Venugopalaswamy Aalayam is considered the best. As its attraction is great,
the periodicity of visits by the devotees is decidedly greater. This lies to the
north-west of the town and boasts of superb sculpture. The two-foothigh
Vet,gopalaswamy icon installed in the garbhagriha is masterly sculptured and
casts spell with its posture and polish. He is Chaturbhuja holding in his chakra
and sankhu in left and right hands, and his choicest inseparable flute in the
remaining two hands. The image of a beautiful cow standing behind and licking
his holy feet is an enchanting sight heightening the alluring form and posture
of the archamurti. Among the annual festivals, Gokulashtami is celebrated on a
grand scale with pomp and splendour when huge crowds visit and offer prayers.
